Today is Bowe’s 28th birthday. While birthdays are typically a cause for celebration, the thought that Bowe has now seen five birthdays come and go while in captivity is heartbreaking. This is why today, Bowe’s birthday, is a day of solemness. We reflect on it in our own way and it motivates us all differently for different reasons. But in the end what we all want, what we pray for, is that Bowe will soon return home… to his family, to the place that is safe and familiar.

Maybe today we can all tell somebody that a friend who you’ve never met is having a birthday, that his name is Bowe Bergdahl. Tell them about Bowe and ask them to tell his story too. Today give Bowe the gift of your time. Dear Bowe Supporters, it’s YOU who stand in the gap for Bowe until he comes home. We are all waiting and advocating for Bowe until we can celebrate his homecoming.

“With the long war in Afghanistan winding down, the plight of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has left the U.S. government trying to reconcile those two longstanding credos in a bid to win the freedom of the only American solider held as a captive.

Bergdahl has been held by insurgents in Pakistan since 2009. Extremely sensitive discussions are under way with intermediaries overseas to see if there is any ability to gain his release, a U.S. official told CNN on Tuesday.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following reports that the U.S. military has received a video showing that U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl may be alive, U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte is urging the Secretary of Defense to redouble efforts to locate the missing soldier, who was captured by the Taliban in 2009 in Afghanistan.

“This June will mark five years since Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban. After so long in captivity, DoD must redouble its efforts to find Sergeant Bergdahl and return him safely to his family,” Ayotte wrote in a letter this week to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

Senator Ayotte has repeatedly urged the Defense Department to redouble its efforts to find Sgt. Bergdahl and bring him home – including writing two letters to then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta requesting an update on the department’s actions. She also worked successfully to include language in the Senate Armed Services Committee report for the fiscal year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, which called on DoD to answer questions on the status of the search for Sergeant Bergdahl.

Dear Secretary Hagel:

I am writing to request an update on the Department of Defense’s (DoD) efforts to locate and bring home Sergeant Bowe R. Bergdahl.

On January 15, it was reported that a proof-of-life video featuring Sergeant Bergdahl was received by DoD. Can you please confirm whether this video exists and has been received by the Pentagon? If the reports are accurate, this video appears to provide hope that Sergeant Bergdahl may be alive.

This June will mark five years since Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban. After so long in captivity, DoD must redouble its efforts to find Sergeant Bergdahl and return him safely to his family.

Our men and women in uniform must know that if they are captured by the enemy, our nation will not rest until they are rescued.

I look forward to receiving your response. Thank you for your service to our country.
